fragment king: midian (2002-2009)

in 2002, i worked on a whole series of recordings that included guitar and bass guitar, synths and samplers, and various digital recording and editing methods. the results of these sessions were fragment king's pathomechanical studies, the schismotecture recordings, and material used for nexicon. midian, featured here, was originally a drum machine and guitar piece that included synth. an edited and truncated version is part of the schismotecture recordings. seven years later, i decided to take a look at the original tracks that eventually turned into "void" back then. the original track name, which tend to simply pop up in my mind as result of some form of association, was "midian". back then, i had worked on two versions, which i re-worked in protools. the result of that re-working is the online halforganic blog exclusive which i'm offering here: two tracks, "midian 1" as originally intended in full length, and "midian 2", also in full length. and when i say "length", i mean it. together they clock in at almost 50 minutes. think godflesh x lustmord: dehumanized, in the sense of the german "entmenscht", vast, barren, sprawling, sinister, massive, desolate. what come to my mind are the landscapes of the meta-dimensional space of the space-time engineers as thomas ziegler described them in perry rhodan 1250. that pretty much sums it up! there is actually one physical copy in existence, frank merten owns it. the graphics i'm associating with the recordings here was originally created by georg küttinger for the nexialist organization. download the mp3 version here:

for all ends, there is a beginning! and the live actions of fragment king begin here, with the very first live appearance of fk at the border festival in trier, germany, 1997! this was the event where fk also reconnected with iron nedim, who later formed the instantbul project together. the border live show employed fk in his first manifestation, with a pc tower plus soundcard for beats and synths, mixed together with vinyl records on two turntables and a mixer - essentially making it a hybrid live/dj set. there is no foto from that event, but fk played the same set at the follow-up border festival in berlin at acud 100 days later (above foto is from that event). the selection of fk tracks consists of all-unreleased material of which half appeared on the very first fk demo, "the demo that exploded" - which was of course named after "the ticket that exploded" by william s. burroughs. the other half are songs that have remained in the vault until now. "on guard" may be the harshest fk tune, more gabber than idm, until the 2nd manifestation of fk and the development of structural music. so here we go - the first fk live action!

this post gives me the opportunity to tie past and present together. recently i got fan feedback stating how great the synthesizers on the ANGEL MINUS tracks are that can be previewed in fk's myspace jukebox player. which is great, because it's always great when people like the music. the only thing being that there are no synthesizers in the ANGEL MINUS tracks - it's all bass guitar. from which stems part of the confusion that fk provokes. in fk's 2nd manifestation, the "guitar" sound was indeed provided by a synthesizer - a yamaha tx7, to be exact, connected to a series of effects which produced a grinding, yet also droning sound. in essense, something like digital SUNN 0))) with breakbeats. at that time (and effectively today) no one would really combine those two aesthetics. which brings us to fk's performance at the providence industrial fest, which was part of the north america tour with headliners KLANGSTABIL and co-headliner NTT. fk went on stage, played, and smacked the place to bits. the confusion among some stemmed from the nature of the sound. some folks thought i was playing "trance" - they had never heard either drum n bass or death metal before. combine that with drones, and presto, you have "trance" or so, which is ok. the performance was received well by all despite the confusion among some except for one fanzine gonzo who took the opportunity to slander every breakbeat act that played that day, in the name of "orthodox industrial". so when you would google fk, you would find a link to that "critique". i ran into the guy before my set and knew instantly i wouldn't get along; and so it was, i guess, something that had been decided on regardless of performance or quality. but you can form your own opinion. here's the providence industrial festival performance of fragment king!

fragment king live at nexialist exposition nyc 2002-09-24

the first event of the nexialist exposition took place in new york, at openair's idm event hosted by the folks from recordcamp. n.deiker and fragment king played back-to-back. after that, we headed to ibo's in germany...i have an original report from 2002 that i'm featuring here: "nex-expo, first stop: new york. 8:30 - the evening starts with lee from ntt and nexicon driving nico (n.deiker) and yours truly (the friendly neighborhood fragment king) to the opaque façade of openair. as soon as we get in, we start setting up everything and loading the videos into their system as lara and adesh, the recordcamp masterminds arrive. adesh gets his birthday present and starts spinning and i get a beer. in the meantime, the films roll in the background (with some glitches) and a lotta people show up, among them good friends. 9:00 - n.deiker goes on and ROCKS. block-rockin’ finest electro. incredibly crisp sound…the bass makes the air vibrate…nico also drops an uncreated tune that we wrote together with our buddy iron nedim, and some of his 808 classics that bang so analog it’s hard to believe it’s coming from the laptop. 9:30 - enter fragment king. beginning with a dot://hack jam until the damn thing crashes right towards the end of the song…switch into the fast breaks set running through the new, minimized setup with micro-drum machine and filters. the set oscillates from growling death metal chords to really weird synth sounds that surprised me, too, and some evil feedback the way it should be (before my equipment gives up for good…running straight into red level towards the end of the set). 10:00 - hooray for n.deiker and the fragment king! and huge thanks to the recordcampers and the folks who came, danced, had drinks and enjoyed the sound. heck, we even sold some records. thanks to the cops, too who came and asked to be a little less loud even though they admitted liking it. my back hurts after all the headbanging and crouching. we pack together our stuff, salvage the minidisc from the mixer and hit the road back to the ‘burbs after lotsa hugging and goodbye’s!" i'm featuring the fk part of the event here. the laptop breakdowns which resulted in crashes and some pretty weird midi fuck-ups make this set rather unique. nuff said, here goes!

behold, as the voice of fk is heard for the first time in this sphere. the nexialist exposition finale event did not only present the world a fragment king with no holds barred, driven far beyond the point of no return. it was also the event where vocals first came into play, thus opening the gates to the final manifestation of fk - even though you'll have to listen through the whole set for the voice to appear. who recognizes the line? get back to me and i'll figure out some kind of reward! the nexialist exposition took place in new york and in germany, in the southern german town of vilsbiburg to be exact. the club named "ibo's" after the club manager's first name was basically a log cabin in the commercial area of the town, almost reminiscent of "two-eyed jacks", the locale of twin peaks lynchean fame. fk allies n.deiker and iron nedim also presented there, deiker with an elektro live set and the iron one behind the wheels of steel. plusminus0 provided video ambience. fk had planned to use a completely different synthesizer set-up but n.deiker did not provide the tools in time, and everything changed. already imbued with a bad mood with having to completely alter the set-up, fk decided to do an improvised dot://hack and power electronics show which proved incredibly violent noise washing over the assembled crowd like iron gall vomited forth from the watchdog of hell. this changed the outlook of fk completely. no longer was the human component suppressed and delegated to the movement of body in space, which fk had made his personal conquest. here it erupted in a frenzy of mangled beats and decomposed sound, armed with nothing more than an ibm laptop and a microphone. an important theme emerged: the trademark of hardcore, the call-and-response. fk called, the audience responded. this was the first step in the clandestine war on silence: when there are no answers, not only communication, culture itself breaks down. when there are no answers, the manifestation of the future itself becomes subject to sabotage from external forces and we become imprisoned within an endless nightmare of the present: frozen to standstill. in this sense, the only logical step is for the questions to become the answers.

of course, during the early millenium glory days in new york city, when "breakcore" was still pretty much "idm", fk ran into dj donna summer aka jason forrest, who both, ironically, now live in berlin. back then, fk was invited to play live at jason's radio show, "advanced dungeons and dragons", broadcast by wfmu radio in new jersey. so fk packed up his equipment from the 2003 setup, which included, among others, an array of machines which other idm players of lore had (rather derogatively) described as "surplus" - surplus in this case however included "more kick ass than your powerbook alone." i think there was a zoom drum computer in there, and of course the electrix mo-fx, and an assortment of fun stuff, including my old ibm laptop, which i basically destroyed with the dot://hack method descibed elsewhere. fk played his set, which was rather varied and, with an early fk jam titled "grid" as opener, included a classic "drum n grind" section followed by ambience, some more concrete material, and a hack-up in addition to a really fun interview. machine, legendary nj party promoter, was also sitting in the control booth alongside mr. summer/forrest. a fun time was had by all! unfortunately, there are no photos or such from the event, so you'll have to stick with the pure audio. as all live sets from the 2003 era, the material differs in sound very much from the studio versions, not necessarily an advantage, yet with the goal to produce a truly live sound. "well done, fk!"

since the album version of this live set has been online for some time now, i'll add to the previous notes for the album. the luitpold lounge received design treatment by markus link, for whom i freelanced in my architecture days. he and peter haimerl had collaborated in art projects under the name team444 - which is how i got in touch with peter haimerl for the nexialist operation mimesis. team444 finally did a series of events in the luitpold lounge near downtown munich. the curator there was unfortunately an exceptionally bitchy, presumptuous, and ignorant person. so haimerl did his presentation and i followed with an fk set. for that purpose i had also brought along my bass combo for extra low-end punch. the reception was half and half. some loved it, some hated it. those who hated it, however, don't know much about music either: penderecki for instance was a "bohemian village" to them, as the proverb goes. anyway. this was fk's munich appearance, a city otherwise not known for confrontational music, and it hurt. the set includes some classics such as "total now" and electronic versions of anatomic tracks as well as the rare "sadako" as finale.

this show was yet another step forward in the path of grey ash that fragment king left behind. in summer 2004, vocal and bass guitar samples from the anatomic sessions rained down like gunmetal sludge on the industrial/breakcore audience that had assembled in the chic public center the resistance festival took place in. fk employed two laptops and assorted effects on this event and was accompanied by a backdrop video by luca curci. what an event it was, i met bazooka and synapscape for the first time here, who also played the event, among many others. in fact, bazooka and i were the only people wearing olive camo pants. everyone else - strictly black. the fk set features tracks from the 12" split with nexicon as well as anatomic alternative mixes, some of which are on the mental machinery compilation as well, yet in "clean" versions. the set is pronouncedly "dirty" as a step towards the final fk manifestation of the grey album phase. it is an intermediary phase between the "split personality" phase of fk from 2002 to 2004, where studio tracks featured live guitars, yet livesets were digital/electronic driven, and, as stated, the final fk era. but as such, it is also a watershed and features exclusive material and tracks rarely played live.

and here is the next liveset! the first show in which fk played live bass in addition with vocals and laptop. the show promoter hired fk after his london performance, which still featured the dual laptop setup. unfortunately, he was deeply disappointed by fk playing live bass. too metal! (he didn't even want the copy of "grey album" that i offered him as a thank you for the invite.) well, that was the point from the first day of existence for fk - the combination of machines and flesh, beats and guitars. so here we are. and this is exactly where fk wanted to go from the start. fk began in europe, developed further in the usa, and then returned to europe, which brings us to kino aero in prague: fk opened the prague industrial festival in an old movie theater. the space was great to play in. the sound was pristine, thanks to the "rock" guy who managed the sound. and beyond that, fk hooked up with the herbst niners and with z'ev, who was positively surprised by fk's bass sound. and that, as we know by now, resulted in the formation of "the.bänd." the prague show features songs from the "grey album" plus a rather free-form outro (with a lyrical nod to ntt). the whole show was also recorded on video and elements of that recording are captured in fk's amorphine video. here, for your listening pleasure, the 7 songs are edited in 2 long parts.

this is the beginning of a series of ten live sets that i will make available online, beginning with the last fragment king live action to date, at the elektroanschlag 8 festival in altenburg. fk performed with treated bass guitar, vocals, laptop and effects. most pieces were taken from the grey album in addition to two previously unreleased pieces (one is featured here). the show was also recorded on video. 5 tracks can be streamed here or downloaded via archive.org (link further below). the show was a success, yet resulted in an absence of label support. obviously positive critique of recordings and successful live appearances are not enough for a sustained presence in the industrial scene, perhaps the combination of heavy guitar sound and mechanical drums is too outlandish for today's label tastes. nevertheless, it is what it is: fk.

fragment king: structural music (2002-2004)

this is without a doubt the most violent and destructive music the nexialist organization has to offer: a nihilistic vortex of shredded sound. structural music as the name for this collection of pieces covers both studio and live recordings created with a method that i have called "digiscrub" or "dot://hack". i developed this method in early 2002 as a means of real-time and live "playing" of the pc laptop as a music instrument. the method is based on the highlight/loop function of 2-track recording and editing software. this is NOT equal to the semi-predetermined loop-tomfoolery of software such as "live." in structural music, the highlight/loop-section of a 2-track recording is continuously changed in real-time by use of the laptop input tool. in the case of the ibm thinkpad i was using by then, this was enabled by triggering the little red knob in the center of the keyboard very much like a joystick. in essence, this produced a jumping back-and-forth within the track, as if someone would lift the stylus of a record player up and drop it again and again in random positions on a vinyl record. but not only this. by zooming in scale, microscopic events within minimal time loops could be generated, creating almost microtonal "playing" of semi-melodic sound. but do not be confused by the hint of harmony: in essence, the digiscrub method results in brutal, hacked, obtruncted sound splinters that have their counterpart in the graphic world within the "micromegas" of daniel libeskind (i reflected on his work in connection to the works of john zorn and william s. burroughs someplace else). the creation of a splintered soundscape that passes by incredibly fast and abruptly is more so similar to looking out of the window of a train passing tchernobyl while on some heavy relaxant, and then time-compressing the whole thing into 1/1000th of the original time. pretty harsh, so to speak. or more so, insanely violent. in terms of structural music as a gesture, it is a point of departure from the earlier, songwriting and sequencing driven phase of fragment king, breaking free from the dictatorship of the "song", totally destroying linearity, leapfrogging the repetitive cyclicity of the "track" and jumping into the burning grey ash of the end of music - which is also a war on silence. after that, the bass-heavy (as in bass guitar, that is) fragment king "one-man-band" emerged, the "total incarnation" of fk, where the human body takes center stage by force, yet not against the machine, but with it. in methodological terms, i employed the digiscrub method for both fragment king and the nexicon project, a collaboration with seminal american power electronics artists ntt. note: this is not "breakcore" (i.e. the failed attempt to emulate drum n bass), nor has it anything to do with that trend. in essence, structural music is a big "fuck you". this is purely improvised music. as such, it is closer to jazz than the despicable trend of "acid-jazz" would suggest for itself. the collection focuses on structural music produced for fragment king and features the original 4 structural music tracks plus 2 additional pieces, all of which were based on pre-recorded fragment king material using laptop, bass guitar, and field recordings (the screaming child is something i picked up in a social housing complex in southern germany, on occasion, which, what a coincidence, introduces a spatial and social aspect). the live tracks cover the 2002-2004 period of fragment king's live performances, in which structural music played a central role in challenging and confronting the listener and conquering the audible space of the live environment. two of these live edits were recorded during the infamous "nexialist exposition" in a decorated shed ("ibo's") in the industrial and commercial park of the southern german town of vilsbiburg, in which fragment king and n.deiker played back-to-back with dj-ing by iron nedim and visuals by plusminus0. the 2003 live performance was recorded at wfmu radio upon invitation from the host of the advanced dungeons and dragons show, jason forrest aka dj donna summer. finally, the last piece of the collection is a recording from a performance at fluc in vienna. the live tracks also make use of film samples, most notably various godzilla films and the japanese "ringu" as well. structural music shows how the nexialist organization deals with limitations in a way that is both creative and destructive, and adding to the paradox, is capable of implementing that knowledge within a performance. confrontational, violent, nihilism; a bad dentist session, a 500 pound bill burroughs on steroids, your girlfriend fucking everyone else except you: structural music has it all when you need full force catharsis.

the year 2005 was a beginning and an end in many ways for me. it saw the birth of the grey album, i wrote electro tracks for the 12 inch singles project, and created the well-tempered room recordings, featured here. this is an ambient project, and as such one of the "calmest" recordings i've created so far. the interesting thing is, depending on where you stand in a room in which the recordings are played, they sound different. the original intention was to have them be played simultaneously with an arranged set of 8 speakers, enabling listeners to move freely between them, thus providing them with an emphatic listening of each of the 8 tracks in a physical, spatial mix. the 8 pieces were composed from electro-acoustic improvised sessions that were grouped, edited, and correlated according to a set of desired acoustic properties and edited as a continuous acoustic "field" - it functions as one piece that can be played without interruption in sequence, or at random as well. in terms of style, it is the antithesis to much of the more confrontational nexialist productions and as such a welcome change to me to produce something that is actually soothing, relaxing, and intended as an acoustic design element for generic or personal spaces. in this regard it ties into the spatial theme prevalent in the nexialist organization.

here is a document. anatomic music was created during darkest of dark times of my life, in heaviness and brutality and destructive creative gesture (hello, schumpeter) only surpassed by the structural music sessions. the development of the pieces featured here (4 guitar/voice session tracks, 4 ambient versions, 2 remixes created for this 2009 online release) was very elaborate, beginning from purely electronic forms, some versions of which can be found on the mental machinery mix or the live a2 munich recordings. event though they're quite heady and may overconceptualize the project (which i today find no longer particularly necessary, as the songs speak for themselves and have a kind of anti-intellectual guttural, animal brutality) i'm featuring the original liner notes here as it may be interesting to follow the mindset that inspired the songs: "anatomic music is a composition and recording project employing specific design strategies inherent in architectural design. for one, the origin of the compositions is an exploding singular moment in time unfolding itself outside its nontopological point of origin (the human brain) into the topological space surrounding any sound projection device. in this sense, anatomic music captures the idea of the "entwurf", the design strategy as originated in thought as opposed to the design originated in pure necessity. the idea constitutes the paradox instrument of event before motivation and thus becoming meta-motivation. the metaphoric motivation of the innards, the only space the individual truly controls, drives the digital and performative concept of the music pieces, beginning from the "written" sequencing to the "performed" session and the amalgamation of these aspects in the digital suite." the sessions are separated into typological groups. each group was created based on digital processing, followed by various steps of performative transformation with electronic and electro-acoustic instruments, field recordings, bass guitar and vocals, including the generating of new material upon each work stage. beginning from the electronic versions, the following groups were created: anamnesis and section (the purely electronic proto-versions, compare here), depositio (the placing of the dead body. stainless steel tables in tiled rooms are the altar slabs of now. its symbolic representation is a choice of aesthetics. science becomes religion) and forensics (clinical observation in its totality requires a certain amount of emotional distance from the researched object. this step equals an act of self-recognition within the research process and is comparable to the turning of the mask as described by vilem flusser). some pieces were released on various compilations and constitute prototypes which were subject to comprehensive further development and additional songwriting and included in the grey album. a live performance from this era is here and gives you an impression of the recording process. most of the pieces are however unreleased, and labels obviously greylisted fragment king, preventing and sabotaging any coherent release on cd or vinyl, despite selling other fk releases. the anatomic sessions, consisting of the depositio and forensics tracks plus two dub versions, are collected here:

nexicon is pretty active for a band project that is actually no longer active. members of ntt and fragment king got together in 2002 and 2003 for a number of improvised sessions and radical live shows. the first resulting release was a split 12" vinyl record released by the nexialist organization in 2003. a year after that, invasion wreck chords released a nexicon live track on their noizzze! compilation. the year after that, a full-length album was finally complete, edited and mastered in the white furnace lodge of the nexialist organization. but obviously, the project had been greylisted. after long delay, "life emitting diode" finally did come to being, as a limited and exclusive cdr release on the annihilvs label. however, that was not the end of the story. for one, video live footage of their final show at tonic in new york city surfaced online. also, plenty session material had still not been polished and mastered. in 2009 finally, "offal" was complete - it features more metallic, guitar-oriented doomy, droney pieces and has an overall more improvised feel than "life emitting diode". also, it is edited as a continuous, gapless album - perfect as soundtrack to your personal head movies at home. put on those headphones and kill your braincells with "scape", "great wall", or "contenders". the nexialist organization is making the entire album available as free-for-download mp3 album including artwork. nexicon: offal can be accessed here:

nexialist presents: schismotecture. the navidson record (2003)

schismotecture was a nexialist recording project completed in early 2003 in new jersey. it was created simultaneously with fragment king's "pathomechanical" and nexicon's "life emitting diode" sessions. located somwhere in between in terms of sound, it includes industrial drone pieces among more ambient pieces and dot://hack sessions. at that time, fk recorded an extensive bulk of material that either was guitar/digital beat oriented or ambient/guitar drone/digital fx manipulated. the more "manipulated" tracks differed from the rather "pure" tracks which ended up being allocated to fragment king's "pathomechanical", and are more akin to the original sessions that nexicon also created then. essentially, "schismotecture" is indeed in the vein of nexicon, yet a solo effort. in terms of ulterior motivation, "schismotecture" was inspired by the book "house of leaves" by mark z. danielewski and was intended to be the audio companion ("the navidson record") for the book, providing an acoustic set of phenomena that illustrates the feeling evoked in the book. in this sense, one may call it a "concept album", which again separates it from fk (songs) and nexicon (group jams and sessions) as the tracks featured here may intersect with fk and nexicon in terms of sound, yet constitute an individual entity due to its underlying contextual theme. it's thus actually architecture-driven. eat your heart out, convenience-music-loving architectural dandys, this is what discourse sounds like. it is also one of the "lost" nexialist albums.

beyond fragment king and the other related nexialist-allied projects including nexicon and the more beat-driven electro material with n.deiker, m.kammerbauer had been producing material for use in short film and media art of third-party creators over the course of 5 years. in 2008, a continuous mix of this more ambient, click-cut, whatever-you-may-call-it, "smart music" was created for the nexialist website as a digital download. an essay from 2005 states, "the style of the music shifts between mostly ambient with elements of noise, breaks, field recordings. some of it represent typological "elements" conveying separate, identifiable emotional or perspective themes. the grouped selections provide the film maker with a "sound kit", with which he can "outfit" his picture, as if the selections were acoustic "building blocks", electro-acoustic and post-digital [scenes] based on perceptive [types] or [units] as requested by the director and extrapolated from the pictorial [feel] of the film. source material used and generated is treated with analog and digital processing equipment during the composition process." the motivation process functions thus: "in order to create the music for film, i let the pictorial source evoke a response within myself, which i reflect into the sound, which becomes the acoustic interpretation of the film aesthetic. the choice of sounds is a personal choice, sometimes directed by a textual cue of the director or by the film itself. this way, the director receives the most direct response to his film as possible and can use the developed acoustics as a raw material, to be sculpted around the film very much like a room drapes itself around its inhabitant. the relationship between film and sound is a dynamic one, flipping in- and outward, one becoming the substrate as the other becomes the enshrined life." the entire album is available via the following link:

the nexialist organization conducted the nexialist operation mimesis in 2004, and in follow of this, m.kammerbauer / fragment king was invited to create the acoustics for a presentation by the architect of the atelier mimesis, peter haimerl. this event took place in the luitpold lounge in munich on july 11, 2004. beginning with a reprisal of the sounds generated during the nexialist operation mimesis, a fk set commenced, using two laptops and pre-recorded bass guitar/guitar/vocals from the anatomic sessions within an electronics based set featuring a number of previously unreleased/alternate version tracks. the equipment used included two laptops, a mo fx effects unit, and a bass combo for additional physical/spatial sound. similar to "live at si", "live a2" comprises a signature set for fk and is an important, immediate stage in the development of fk towards the grey album phase. the posh luitpold lounge was left behind as a burnt shell with wafts of grey ash swirling about after fk was done with his job. listen how snobs fled in terror before the power of fragment king after downloading a zip including gapless mp3 album and artwork here:

in 2002, fragment king had recorded a number of songs that had gone further than before in terms of orchestration. these were no longer electronic jams and tracks that made use of distorted synth sounds in order to create a guitar "ambience". fk used bass guitar, guitar, and vocals and had thus reached his creative goal. the album received a project title - "pathomechanical" - matching an experimental track he created in 1999, using an akai sampler, vocals, and bass guitar. however, "pathomechanical" is the lost album of the halforganic series, as it was slated for a 2003 release as nex007, but never came to be. half of the songs were substantially reworked and completely re-recorded for fragment king's GREY ALBUM in 2005 but appear in their original form here. the original recordings have been remastered in 2008 and represent the full brutality of fragment king in his 2002-2003 phase. the complete album can be downloaded via the following link:

in 2002 members of ntt and fragment king started to jam and recorded the resulting sessions. they performed two live shows in new york city in 2002 and 2003, redefining live electronic digital music in combination with electric guitars and vocal etherics. a vinyl release via nexialist and a compilation appearance via invasion wreck chords followed. "life emitting diode" is a selection of their recordings, collaged, fused, and refined, and released in a limited edition audio album through annihilvs. the album includes 9 tracks [plus 1 secret bonus track] ranging from electroacoustic ambience via beat metal to digital hack://grind, performed by lee bartow, tim spann, and mark kammerbauer, and recorded at leechnest in 2002. the recordings were edited and mastered at white furnace lodge in 2004. one significant aspect of nexicon is the development of a real live implementation of computers and software via the hack://grind method, which eventually led to the destruction of fragment king's first laptop.

fragment king and nexicon occupy one side each of this, the one and only nexialist vinyl release to date. the original release notes stated "fragment king’s research in musical structure and semantics manifests itself as a stripped-down combination of post-drum n bass and post-death metal influences hunted through dsp-powered hardware in his live actions. nexicon is the team-up project facilitated by nexialist, a digital tour-de-force of improvised digital music, non-linear and non-semantic, by members of reknowned power noise artists ntt (navicon torture technologies) and the fragment king." the featured track by fragment king, "hammerhead", is important as a transitional piece bridging the early all-electronics phase and the present, "one-man-band" guitar and vocals driven phase: it has fast drum and bass beats, some kind of really deep bass, and distorted guitars, recorded in the studio. bleed of german music magazine de:bug loved it: "joy for all friends of the noisy postdrumandbassnirvana. 2 tracks by fragment king, who loads and towers destroyed bassdrums and screeching breaks in front of him, digs and probes the heap as if it were the innards of a heavy metal sauce for gourmets, who love to gobble up fresh roasted tiniti for breakfast and on the flipside two tracks by nexicon, which sound a lot more like broken machinery than breaks or beats. this is no fast silly funny broken music, but honest and righteous terror with fragments of slime and digital gall." he realized that fk had nothing to do with "silly" breakcore - a fact beyond the guitars that would set fk apart from the comtemporary scene of electronic music makers. tesselate concluded: "dusty cloud of distorto powder was over you until the cymbal lead drumbeat clashes all up in the house, and a pounding bassline skips alongside. wobbling melodies and harsher drum strikes add layers of energy to the already overloaded party. gradually gaining in power, the barrage of beats,chords and bass reaches a peak and lets off a siren like call, just to tell everyone it's safe to come out now. hectic industrial junglist style managed chaos, good one to clear the head. recommended "hammerhead" is all about ducking falling crystals and keeping an eye on them laser beams powering up just over there. a burst of glitch beat drops you into the heart of the track, you notice that the electronics have gone awol. machined burps and spitting flame vents, crush you into a corner, only to be rescued by the glowing drum smashes that push you down a disused shaft and into relative safety. the sounds from the lab echo and spin in the tube creating an almost ambient melody, but watch out you have been spotted. unleashing a torrent of robotic voiceprints, clattering drumclashes and a pounding bassline, you are taken on a sprint through synthetic chaos, where homosapiens are banned. mad track." the colored translucent vinyl came in an edition of 100 in a pvc pouch and two tracks each by fk and nexicon.

this may very well be the most bizarre nexialist release to date. "fleshsounds" is credited to torso, the nexialist project dealing with reversive audible imagery of spatial acoustics - think the sounds of crazy spaces, without the spaces. thus, the sounds are pretty crazy. "fleshsounds" however was not intended as a stand alone project, it was to serve as the background noise for ad-hoc installations with pink neon light, excessively high temperature and preferably a small room with many people: an in-promptu installation that can be set up anywhere. the fleshsounds and the abstraction thereof by means of digital processing create a moment of hyper-intimacy. "check it out with your friends at home!" imagine that together with the sounds. six sessions are on the cd which are created from source audio coming (literally) from porn videos (the cheap, label-less kind you can buy in white sleeves, the "white labels" of porn, if you will). the source audio was edited, manipulated, torn apart and shred to pieces with winamp using a vst plugin and all kinds of effects. preferably all at once. so you have orgasmic moaning, repeated into infinity and disintegrated with delays and bitcrushers. the six process music pieces were released as cdr with color gloss on-disc print (really sexy) in a ridiculously limited edition of 25 and a booklet printed on flesh colored paper and came (totally oversexed) in a brown paper bag. these were handed out, kind of, and simply vanished. there are no reviews - evaluate at your own pleasure.

the uncreated were a project consisting of n. deiker, m. kammerbauer, and n. tezkosar, resulting in a collection of tracks that combine electro, tech-step drum n bass, and idm. kammerbauer and tezkosar had known each other since the days of grunge and going to concerts. they reconnected in the mid-nineties electronic era. tezkosar had already been djing and collaborating with deiker in the electro project riffraff before they decided to jam as an electronic three-piece. sessions took place between 1998 and 1999. after editing and mastering the tracks, they were compiled under the title "uncreated: protocols" and released as a nexialist limited edition. 75 copies were made of the cdr with on-disc print and plastpak with blurb sticker, most of which were handed out as promos. they continued recording and reunited for a live show under the "electroyal" moniker in the moritzbastei in leipzig in late 2004.

in late 2001, fragment king played a live set at the fictive.net porn exhibition at the point gallery in chinatown, new york city. together with architecture (sic) records, a new york based breakcore label, nexialist put out three live tracks from this show as a 3" cdr with color label print. the packaging consisted of a printed 6" x 4" glossy stock card (the image shows the front and back), in a transparent pvc pouch sealed with a transparent sticker, in a limited edition of 100. all copies are sold out today. the front photo was taken at the show on december 11 2001. the photo also gives an idea of the 2001 fk live setup: an akai sampler, a yamaha tx7, an electrix mo-fx, behringer mixer, and assorted guitar effects pedals. grooves magazine reviewed "vivisections" and came to the following conclusion: "fragment king (a.k.a mark kammerbauer) delivers three inches of bile-caked digital madness on vivisection, a microscopic release from these allied new york-area labels. kammerbauer pounds away at both ends of the sound spectrum, stretching ears with high-frequency screeches and sub-zero bass lines almost beyond human ken. indebted to such noise specialists as alec empire and techno animal, this ep also betrays its producer's love of drum n' bass, as the king rolls out enough tasty breakbeats to tempt jungle's most adventurous selectors. all in all, vivisection's solid - if a bit too spectacular for its own good.”

torso: generating space (2002)

torso was a nexialist project aimed at creating the audible phenomena of space, a reversive engineering of spatial sound. 16 tracks were collected for the "generating space" album. it features a red colored cdr with red on-disc print in an edition of 100, in a plastpak with sticker attached. it is now completely sold out. the sticker blurb stated: "artificial and impossible spaces are made possible through torso's processing of spatial audio phenomena! ethereal noise and digital density create explorations into sonic architecture." dead angel concluded: "(…) minimalism is the key here: the efx themselves are used in minimalist fashion, although at times there are several going on at once and it gets pretty dense. the noise generated by such experimental sound processing, especially with the use of distortion and delay, is often gritty and booming, the sound of disturbed things happening in vast open rooms. It's the sound of machinery left to run in empty rooms, a cold and formless sound that implies the absence of humans to control the vibrations. there are moments when the rumble nearly drowns out the rest of the sounds, but then it recedes to reveal much that was previously hidden - a practice of playing hide 'n seek with great shapes of sound. there's a heavy drone quotient at work in places. interesting work of a loud and dark ambient nature." a review from dcfe: "(…) the musician is doing an extension of avant-garde classical music especially of pierre schaeffer, stockhausen and ambience music from brian eno. what's interesting about this cd is that the musician approached musique concrete from a different approach to pierre schaeffer in late 1940s. pierre schaeffer recorded live sound recordings and then manipulates such live sounds electronically using tapes. the musician here did the reverse. he used electronic instruments to imitate live sounds recordings. i could hear the sound of tanks battles, chilling sound in dark tunnel, tv set when all channels closed down, but all these with a sense of roughness in sound." and finally, ibol magazine: "what an evil trick! someone took an unsuspecting minimalist, plugged him into a marshall stack and recorded it on their hard-drive. or at least that is what torso makes me think of. there are almost no discernible "source sounds" in this recording, only (apparently) digital manipulation. an extremely crisp, distilled and singular vision of music, these 16 tracks are layed out in 3 larger groupings, for a total of 67 minutes of noise. most of the textures are fairly harsh, but the presentation is more ambient (ubiquitous, surrounding)."

the first fragment king live show in the usa took place on september 6, 2001 in brooklyn, new york. at this time, fk employed an akai sampler for beats, a yamaha tx7 (a true beast of fm synth), and a number of fx pedals still in action today. the soundboard recording was used for a limited release as tape via nexialist in an edition of 100. "live at si" features artwork by the events host maryam shambayati. the recording brings the synth-as-distorted-guitar sound of fk of the 1999-2003 phase to full fruition in addition to live sound manipulation and a rawness that marked a significant step in fk's development. the tapes were sold or handed out as a promotional item and are long sold out. invazine featured a review of the tape: "avant guard - this is nexialist. (…) the first 30 hearings "live at si" left in me to that in order to understand - the pancake, where they took this mad drummer! ministry are simply obligated to outbid this fellow! (…) in the manifesto of the nexialist label it is registered: "sound as architecture, architecture as text, text as design, design as sound". as it is presented to me, from an ideological point of view precisely, fragment king is worth naming some of the basic heirs of einstürzende neubauten. combining post drum n bass post-death as influences, sampling and deriving/concluding to the foreground "living" impact, fragment king approaches the creation of his own music as architects, who are interested more in process, than by final result. 10 marks - for the acoustic fidelity, the variety, the hardness, the spontaneity, the living atmosphere and kach!"

fragment king recorded "grey album" in 2005 with digital beats and sounds and treated bass guitar and vocals on 8 of the 10 compositions released by invasion wreck chords. this album features a full-power fragment king. emerging from all-electronic beginnings, the combination of guitar sounds with electronic beats had always been the basic concept of the project, inspired by the distortion and power of big black, godflesh, carcass and celtic frost on the one hand, but also the cineastic feel of electronic projects such as source direct, dom + roland, autechre, and meat beat manifesto. lyrics are personal and heavily processed with effects, creating a sound triptych of beats, chords, and voice. the album artwork consists of photography by m. kammerbauer. "grey album" was critically very well received and is completely sold out today. orkus reviewer thomas sonder gave the album 9.5 of 10 points, stating fk "could be described as a mix of power electronics and drone doom with aggressive backgrounds, produced by kammerbauer in an enormously dense and fat manner. godflesh on even more drugs? more than that – grey album makes you sweat, evokes anger, releases force, in the controlled songs with slower pace as well as in the angry, fast noise machines, in which the fragment king has incorporated almost insane energy eruptions in a pretty defragmented way."

instantbul are m. kammerbauer and n. tezkosar, who is also in uncreated and riffraff with n.deiker. between 1999 and 2001, they recorded a number of electro tunes with idm and minimal appeal. samplers and a roland 707 were used for beats, in addition to synthesizers such as oberheim and studio guitar. most tracks were compiled for this album, titled "halforganic". it was released in 2002 in a limited edition of 100 copies, featuring cdr with on-disc print, jewel case, and a glossy stock booklet-sized card with artwork by m. kammerbauer. it was sold online and handed out as promotional item. it is completely sold out today. they contributed a track to the "kappa" compilation released by megahertz. tesselate magazine gives you an idea of what instantbul is about: "woh yeh, electronics electroids everywhere. a slowly roboting robot hogs the dancefloor as his favorite track winds into existence. a fine bassline bubbles away as tickley beats and winding fire alarms force the robot to get on down. tiny lights all over his mainframe flash on and off in conjunction with the music and his small metallic head nods to the crazy beat, until foolishly, he drains himself of power. crazy damn robots."

deiker records released "cities + seasons" in 1999 as a vinyl compilation featuring n.deiker, riffraff, irwin leschet, and fragment king. this marked the beginning of a long-time collaboration between deiker, tezkosar, and kammerbauer that has continued until today. this 12 inch is not available anymore and sold out. here is what motik from ouk magazine had to say: "an adequate beginning is important in order to focus general interest on debutantes. nicolaas jan deiker has definitely accomplished this with cities + seasons. 4 electro tracks by deiker himself, riffraff, fragment king, and irwin leschet, setting my head straight after all the recent hiphop. it would be interesting to know how our grandchildren would react to this record. it is hardly imaginable that deiker & co will become the "wildecker herzbuben" of the late 20th century..."

in 2001, the nexialist presents: halforganic compilation featured 10 tracks by nexialist collaborators fragment king, n.deiker, instantbul, uncreated, and torso (the last piece on the compilation was credited to "pathomechanical", which is basically yet another m.kammerbauer alias, featuring bass guitars and vocals). most music on the cd is exclusive and otherwise no longer available. it was published as a cdr with on-disc print in a jewel case including a booklet-sized cardstock card with glossy color print featuring photo artwork by georg küttinger, limited to an edition of 100. the compilation was used as a promotional item, handed out at shows, and sold online. it is sold-out today. german electronic culture magazine "de:bug" reviewed the compilation in 2001: "halforganic is a sound collective of sorts, consisting of multiple acts (instantbul, torso, fragment king, n.deiker, pathomechanical and various constellations thereof). the tracks oscillate between noisescapes, dark analogue electro-breaks, chipmonster-drumandbass, and dark worlds bordering electronica. darkness seems to be a necessity, just as the city center of stuttgart, and fragment king sometimes peeks through the modestly morbid vision with some silly ideas, with a solid joy for the dissonant and clattery. get your warm stuff on, it'll be a cold winter."
